Storytelling Technology Image is World Press Photo of the Year

Such a beautiful image. Could this be a group of people taking a selfie? Of perhaps a picture of the moon? Not quite.

African migrants on the shore of Djibouti city at night, raising their phones in an attempt to capture an inexpensive signal from neighboring Somalia—a tenuous link to relatives abroad. Djibouti is a common stop-off point for migrants in transit from such countries as Somalia, Ethiopia and Eritrea, seeking a better life in Europe and the Middle East.

The storytelling image beat out more than 98,000 others to nab the top spot. Jury member Jillian Edelstein, a South African-born but UK-based photographer, said, “It’s a photo that is connected to so many other stories — it opens up discussions about technology, globalization, migration, poverty, desperation, alienation, humanity.

"It’s a very sophisticated, powerfully nuanced image. It is so subtly done, so poetic, yet instilled with meaning, conveying issues of great gravity and concern in the world today."

THE GAP by Ira Glass

From art-director Daniel Sax who pulled the audio from am already well-known (and terrific) interview with Ira Glass and transformed it into a beautiful piece of visual storytelling.

I made it for myself and for anybody who is in doubt with his/her creative career. I also think that Ira Glass’ message isn’t only limited to the creative industry. It can be applied to everyone who starts out in a new environment and is willing to improve.

Inspiring animations from Sweden
The Swedish artist Johan Thörnqvist creates beautiful drawings out of ‘amateur’ pictures made with his phone. The pictures serve as a source of inspiration, in which Thörnqvist builds a whole new world that really speaks to your imagination. With his eye for detail and interesting point of view, Thörnqvist achieves to transform something boring into a place filled with interesting creatures and funny events.  Inspiring animations from Sweden

    Danielle by Anthony Cerniello

Stunning video portraying the aging process of a person. Simple concept, amazingly intricate and perfect execution, and emotionally intense viewing experience.

Just so you know: even though Danielle is based on a real person (and photo’s of her family memnbers at different ages), this is a virtual animation.

Watch it full screen with headphones on for an immersive and profound experience.

"What if money was no object?" - Alan Watts

This video has been making its rounds online (almost 2 million views in four months’ time), understandably so:
A heartfelt plea of the late Alan Watts to live the life you want to live, set to beautiful images of, amongst others, BBC’s Earth series.

What would you do with your life, if money was no object? And why don’t you, even if it is?

    Hyundai Street League film

From our good friend and talented writer/director Robert Samuels (aka Superrocketman) in the UK, comes this beautiful and heartfelt film about how football - or soccer for you Americans - transforms the lives of disadvantaged young people.

Take a moment to be awed by a short film in which football meets poetry meets inspiration. Featuring poem and performance by one of the most respected spoken word artists in the UK: Polarbear.

Street League is a UK charity made possible by Hyundai.
