THE GAP by Ira Glass

From art-director Daniel Sax who pulled the audio from am already well-known (and terrific) interview with Ira Glass and transformed it into a beautiful piece of visual storytelling.

I made it for myself and for anybody who is in doubt with his/her creative career. I also think that Ira Glass’ message isn’t only limited to the creative industry. It can be applied to everyone who starts out in a new environment and is willing to improve.

A typology of interactive narratives

The slide above (from Benjamin Hoguet illustrates the 6 modes of interactive narratives. Traditional feature films can mimic these topologies but, in the end, find themselves progressing linearly though time. This constraint can be an asset, perhaps no more deftly exploited than by Andrei Tarkovksy - who wrote an entire book about sculpting time in the medium of filmmaking.

The most powerful experiences stretch us beyond our own known world, imbuing us with new perspectives. Furthermore, by having some agency in how the experience forms, the passive mode of movie-watching can turn into something tangibly active. The stories themselves can’t be linear any longer, as illustrated above, so every intention in the experience must be that much more rewarding.

Stay Together

This video series by Skype is a great example of the power of digital storytelling: it showcases personal stories about actual people who are enabled to stay together via Skype. In a direct and yet organic way, we see how Skype integrates into the fabric of people’s lives; and we get to know some fascinating individuals and their amazing stories.
The brand called for submissions from around the world in response to the question: “How do you stay together over Skype?”  with the Stay Together video series as a result.

This episode, ‘The Born Friends Family Portrait’, features a heartwarming portrait two best friends, with a special history.

Aren’t you a Skype fan after seeing this video? We are!

The 1% rule is the famous rule of thumb for user generated content services like Wikipedia or YouTube that says 1% of your users will create content, 9% will edit and curate, and 90% will just sit back and view.

In other words: great, original and unique content is still scarce and in high demand!

Birds (1 of 4 short films)

Stunning video for Anouk's new song 'Birds' (singing in the Eurovision Song Contest final this Saturday).

Directed by one of our favorite Dutch directors: Dana Nechushtan. Watch the entire series of beautiful, sad, lovely films here: Four short films by Anouk - Sad Singalong Songs

Great use of storytelling in this music video miniseries, intermingling and connecting characters, locations and situations, to create a story of larger scale.
