In with the new, out with the old… - The end of video stores
There is a misconception, sometimes, that the digital revolution (or any revolution for that matter) is always a change for the better. In the mayhem and turmoil of our current digitisation, a lot of the good stuff gets lost. Video stores, for example. Remember those? Great places to browse through new movies, talk to employees who could recommend you great new videos (because those guys had seen EVERYTHING), even meet up with friends to decide which movies to watch that night… Well, those places are gone now, with everybody downloading and streaming their videos. And that is truly a loss, a loss of social interaction, of placement, and of culture, that will not come back in the foreseeable future. Alas.
So here’s a great photo essay on abandoned video stores. Heart-wrenching!
At the same time, however, I do remember the crappy quality of those rental videos, and the horror of coming home and finding out the video tape or DVD wouldn’t play in your VCR… Argh! Out with the old I say! In with the new, out with the old… - The end of video stores
